Fang does not trust Ari and the flock splits up. Max, Nudge, Angel, Total, and Ari go to Germany. In the middle of the "epic fight", Ari collapses. He had an expiration date on the back of his neck, which is the day in which he expires. Ari dies for a second time in Max's arms.

She ended up going after him and knocking him over and that's when he hit his head at an awkward angle, broke his neck and killed him. In other books he returns and Max thinks she's hallucinating, but she isn't. It turns out that Jeb had the power and technology to bring Ari back to life.
