It depends. Generally, Windows Movie Maker supports avi. But if the avi is encoded with codec that don't supported by your system, there will be problem while importing to Windows Movie Maker.
So the solution is to install a comprehensive codec pack. You could choose K-Lite Mega Codec Pack (free codec)

If you has a video converter on your system, convert avi to wmv before importing to Windows Movie Maker.
Open the MSWMM file with Windows Movie Maker. Go to File>Save Movie File and follow from there.

Go online and Google: Windows Movie Maker codecs. Hundreds of site will be found. Choose a site and follow the instructions for downloading it.
