In general, a 500 mL bottle of IV calcium should be given steadily over at least 10 minutes and the cow's heart rate and rhythm should be monitored by someone with a stethoscope to the cow's chest while the calcium is being given. If the heart rate slows or the rhythm becomes irregular, the calcium needs to be given slower or stopped briefly until the heart recovers.
