As far as I Know there have not been any official scientific studies to question whether coffee can stunt or stop a persons growth. My guess would be "no". It seems that though coffee may not be particularly good for young people still in childhood or early teens, as all the caffeine is generally not good for them. It will not "stunt" or "stop" their growth and they will not end up any shorter then they would have if they had not drunk coffee.
The house hold rumor was most likely started by mothers or fathers not wanting their children to drink coffee.
