Cosmetic surgery is a result not a cause. It is society in general that is teaching the wrong self image. If you watch TV, go to movies, and read magazines the message is that everyone has to be young, blond, a size 2, and very thin/tall. The average woman wears a size 12, but in the media a 12 is "fat." Children get this message from the very start, but the time a girl is 10 years old she is all ready worried about how she looks. A study was done a few years ago concerning how self image affects learning and they found that little girls would rather "look pretty" than be good in school. Girls start to "dumb down" by the time they are in 6th grade because they want to be popular and have the boys like them. I have seen this first hand and it is hard to fight against the message the girls are getting. Simple messages on clothing also add to this. When I see a little girl wearing shirts or pants that say things like "princess" or "spoiled" or the sexual innuendos it gives the same message to girls that it is better to be pretty than smart. It is a very subtle message all through the society. No wonder by the time they are 15 they want cosmetic surgery.
