Defragmenting a disk drive does not save space.

What it does do is to collect all the unused space into a single block (where possible; sometimes drives have unmoveable blocks of data that might hinder this). And degragmentation will also try to collect each file into a contiguous block.

The end result of this is that the speed of accessing data on the disk drive is improved.

Note that defragmenting solid state disks has no beneficial performance effect whatsoever, and can even have an adverse effect in that the drive's lifetime may be reduced.
