The atmosphere gradually gets thinner as you go up; at an altitude of about 100 kilometers, there is hardly any discernible atmosphere. Satellites must go above that altitude; even the thin atmosphere at 100 kilometers is enough to slow them down eventually.

You decide whether you consider that "thin" or "thick" (for example, as compared to what?).
