Does edward what to get killed and why in new moon?

In New Moon, Edward tries to get himself killed by the Volturi because he believes Bella to be dead, as in a vision Alice sees Bella jump off a cliff, and presumes that she was commiting suicide, whereas in actual fact, Bella was taking part in the sport of cliff diving with Jacob, and got into difficulties, nearly drowning. He does not want to face immortal life without her, and he always planned to die right after Bella (because he was reluctant to change her, saying that he would stay with her even though she was human and wouldn't change her, and when she grew old and died, he would follow straight after). He was guilty because when he left at the beginning of New Moon, he told her he didn't love her. He was lying, but Bella believed him.
