an = sign tells the computer that you are about to type in a formula, that you wish to be calculated.

For example (this cell) = SUM(A2:F2) < the range of cells u wish to be added up.

You can also use the autosum function :)

Yes it does. You can actually start with a + or a - but Excel will then convert it into a formula that starts with an equals sign. So if you typed +4+5 it would automatically change the first + to an equals sign. You can also start a function using the @ sign, because this is what is done in Lotus 123, but it will be converted into an equals sign once you enter the function.

If you mean in Excel, yes: you must always start a formula with an equal sign.

What must you type to start off a formula in Excel?

Excel formulas begin with an equal sign, for example:=SUM(A1:A7)will give you the total of the numbers in cells A1, A2, A3, A4, A5, A6 and A7.Array formulas start with = but are enclosed in brace bracket{}.You can also use the plus or minus sign to start a formula, but as soon as you press Enter, a plus will be converted into an equals sign and a minus sign will have an equals sign inserted before it, so the formula will still show as starting with an equals sign.+5+7 will become =5+7-10*2 will become =-10*2Lotus 123 was the big spreadsheet application before Excel. It used the @ sign to start its functions. In order to help people moving from using Lotus 123 to Excel, the ability to start functions with the @ sign was included in Excel, and you can still do that. This applies only to functions at the start of a formula, not any formula.

What should you start every formula with?

equal sign

What symbol is typed first when a formula is entered in excel?

An equal sign because in order for the formula to go through correctly it has to have an (=)

Do a formula has to have an equal sign in every spreadsheet?

If you mean "spreadsheet program", not necessarily. That's a standard used in Excel; in older spreadsheets, such as Lotus 1-2-3, the formula used to start with a plus sign instead. A minus could be used as well, if it was appropriate for the formula. However, nowadays it seems to have become quite standard for formulae to start with an equal sign.

How would you start typing a formula into a cell?

You must start all formulas with an equal (=) sign. This symbol will tell Excel that you want to write a flormula.

What do you have to put in a cell to denote an equation in Excel?

In Excel an equation can be a formula. All formulas in Excel must start with the equals sign. That is what tells Excel it is a formula.

What does an equal sign mean in Excel?

The equal sign in Excel is used to start a formula. All formulas begin with the equals sign. It can also be used for comparing things. In the following example, the first equals sign is starting the formula and the second one is comparing cell A2 and B2: =A2=B2

What symbol must all formulas begin with?

Well, formulas in general don't always start with a sign, but it might be talking about Excel, where they always start with an equal sign (=).

Where is the function icon located in Excel?

Does a formula have equals SIGN in it?

In an Excel spreadsheet and equals sign normally starts a formula. You can also start with a plus or minus or start a function with the @ symbol, because some spreadsheet applications use that, but they will be converted to an equals sign. The equals signs tells Excel that you are going to use a formula, so if you started a function without it, the function would be treated like a piece of text.In an Excel spreadsheet and equals sign normally starts a formula.
