Fairbanks Alaska has 11 months of darkness per year, and 5 months of light/dark mix the rest of the year. Except during leap year, when Fairbanks only has 9 months total, and 7 of them are non-stop light, to make up for the eleven months of darkness.

My family was stationed in Alaska for 2 years when I was in high school. We lived in Eagle River which is about 30 minutes from Anchorage. From my experience there was not 6 complete months of daylight and darkness. In the fall it would begin to get dark around early afternoon and the sun would rise in the am again. When it was spring it would begin to change. So during the summer months the sun would set but only to the point that the sky would look like sunset. Then the sun would rise again in the morning. So basically you do have a small amount of sun in the winter but not much and in the summer most people have heavy curtains or foil covering their windows because "night" is not very dark. However, if you go farther north you do get full darkness and light. Hope this was not confusing.

Yes. The reason Alaska has 6 months in the day and night, is because the Earth's axis is tilted. Meaning that Alaska is in the North and in the spring and summer it will point at the sun. In the winter and fall, the sun will point to the opposite way from the sun.
