Nearly 17% of the amazon rain forest has been exploited for human settlements. it was predicted long before that if the forest is cleared the land wont support cropping for a longer period of time and soon it wood be deserted . But till now not a sign of desertification is seen in those areas.

∙ 10y agoYes. Farming and Agriculture is responsible for almost two thirds of all deforestation in the Amazon. When so much land is cut back each day, so is the habitat for the huge ecosystems of the Amazon rainforest. The problem is the 'red soil' which the Amazon has grown on is very infertile so when land is used then abandoned, it takes thousands of years before the forest is regained.
