It will not make the infecting virus any different or stronger. It may make you more conscious of feeling lousy and that can make your symptoms feel worse when you focus attention on how you feel.

It is good advice to find another thing to think about, such as read a book, watch a movie, etc. Focusing is still unlikely to make much of a difference, although I believe it can make some difference in how crummy you feel. Many people believe that we can make our ailments better or worse just by the power of our minds.

Things that will make the most difference in how well you feel are eating right, drinking plenty of liquids, and resting in bed. But adding some positive energy and positive thought about your health and wellness may make it better, or at least not worse as negative thoughts might.
