I happen to have high blood pressure and mine drops to normal when I hold my breath...though I do not know if this is normal???? Has anybody else held their breath while having their BP monitored? This actually makes sense - and I have tested this once with my own blood pressure. Holding your breath can temporarily reduce your blood pressure. Why? Because when you don't breathe, the carbon dioxide levels in your body build up. You know they're building up when your brain sounds that alarm that says, "Breathe, dummy!" This alarm is actually configured to go off when CO2 levels get too high (not when oxygen levels are low). When your CO2 levels are high, your tissues need to get more oxygen and send excess CO2 back to your lungs to be exhaled. In order to get more oxygen to your tissues, your arteries expand to allow for more blood to get to your tissues, and Viola! - lower blood pressure. Of course this isn't a long term method to lower your blood pressure. In fact, I don't recommend doing this to "fool" the doctor into thinking you're healthy when you're actually not. If your blood pressure is actually too high, it needs to be treated, not masked.... There have been studies recently that suggest taking long, deep breaths during the day can help lower your blood pressure for good because this somehow helps your body process salt from the diet. I would recommend trying to take deeper breaths because I've read of several health benefits from it.
