Illegal mining does not cause global warming. This is caused by burning fossil fuels (coal, oil and natural gas). What illegal mining often does cause is habitat destruction and water pollution of water sources near the mining operation.

Mining coal eventually causes global warming because the coal ends up being burnt. Burnt coal releases carbon dioxide that has been hidden away for hundreds of millions of years. This extra greenhouse gas is building up in the atmosphere, trapping more heat, and causing global warming.
