If an ordinary person who performs as a comedian-singer-actress and bills herself as a "Madonna impersonator" and gets paid for doing a performance while mimicking Madonna's voice, dress, and mannerisms, this is not a crime.

However, if any person takes another identity and tries to bilk people into donating for a cause, or get donated goods from people, it can be criminal impersonation.

If you impersonate under the criminal statutes in your State to avoid being arrested for a crime you committed, you would likely be charged with criminal impersonation.

*NOTE: Every situation is unique. Consult an attorney for guidance about your own situation, if you need legal help.

Is it a crime to impersonate being someone else by assuming a false identity and to use that identity to unlawfully gain a benefit such as money goods or to avoid being charged for a crime?

Yes, it is a crime. There are people who create personas and live with them for periods of time. Like Frank Abagnale Jr. of Catch Me if You Can fame, these folks are clever, adaptable and often avoid detection for years. Years ago, I met one who claimed to be a doctor studying for his board certification. He had obtained all the trappings of being a medical doctor in a hospital, including an active pager, name tag and coat. He had a wife and young daughter. Eventually, he was arrested, but disappeared after posting bail. Any explanations about his life seemed plausible.
