It does if you want to detect the beta radiation. Beta radiation, beta particles, can be stopped with a sheet of aluminum foil. An aluminum "absorber" would act as a shield to the Geiger-Müller (GM) detector and stop the beta radiation, which is really high energy electrons or possibly positrons. Placing a shield between the source of the beta radiation and the GM detector would block the radiation, thus shielding the detector from it. The detector would be "blind" to the radiation. Note that this would be effective if all you wanted to do was look at gamma rays. The gamma rays and the beta radiation would leave the source and head to the GM detector, the beta particles would be blocked by the aluminum, and only the gamma rays would make it to the GM tube to be counted. When aluminum-27 is bombarded with a neutron a gamma ray is emitted What radioactive isotope is produced?

Aluminum-27 + n -> Aluminum-28 + gamma raywith a 2.3 minute half life Aluminum-28 -> beta- + Silicon-28Silicon-28 is stable.You have now transmuted one stable element to another.

Name a low density meta used to stop beta particles?

one metal that can stop beta particles is aluminum it also has a medium Ionising ability. :)

Can gamma particles penetrate aluminum?

Alpha radiation can be stopped by a sheet of paper, beta by a sheet of aluminum foil gamma... several feet of lead. Positrons are 'anti-electrons' and so it would annihilate itself in contact with an electron from normal metal.

What are the components of natural radiation in order from least to most penetrating?

Alpha particles, which consist of two protons and two neutrons; Beta particles, which consist of one electron; Gamma rays, which is the highest frequency of electromagnetic radiation, has no mass, and is not made up of any subatomic particles. Alpha particles con be stopped by a mere piece of paper; Beta particles can pass through paper but can be stopped by aluminum foil; Gamma rays can pass through paper and aluminum foil, and can only be stopped by lead or concrete.

Why is saw dust used in refractive index of liquid experiment?

Saw Dust as well as other particles like Aluminum flakes and polyethylene particles were used as tracers. The velocity distribution of the liquid flow can be obtained by measuring the displacement of the tracer particles.

Is aluminum radioactive?

Nearly 100% of aluminum found in nature is 27Al, which is not radioactive. There are traces found of radioactive 26Al, but they are not significant. Other, synthetic, radioactive isotopes of aluminum exist, such as 25Al.

Which radioactive particle can be stopped by a regular sheet of notebook paper?

Alpha. Beta particles are blocked by a few mm of aluminum and gamma by a few cm of lead. Alpha. Beta particles are blocked by a few mm of aluminum and gamma by a few cm of lead.

Is the element aluminum radioactive?

no because if it was we wouldn't use it if it was radioactive

What the different from Porous Alumimium to aluminum?

Porous means that there are gaps in the particles that allow water through. Porous aluminum is not watertight.
