well actually I've been told on this website that actually the word originates from old German but i thought it came from America because they say kindergarten in America
It comes from the German "kindergarten", which translates to children garden.
Harry Potter is set in Britain not America. Kindergarten is something in America not Britain. The equivalent would be nursery and the name of it is unknown.

I'm guessing its America, cause in England we call it 'nursery' and Americans use the word kindergarten. I may be wrong but that is my first guess.
