The whole is less than the sum of the parts. A proton or neutron (nucleon) will have less mass in a nucleus that outside it. That's because some of the mass of a nucleon is converted into binding energy to hold an atomic nucleus together. That's the so-called mass deficit. Oh, and before we go, a proton or neutron is called a nucleon only inside the nucleus of an atom. We don't apply that term to either one when they're outside the nucleus.

Inside. The electrons, which are outside of the nucleus, have very little mass.

Where is most of mass of an atom within the nucleus or outside of the nucleus?

Most of mass in nucleus.Mass in out is very low.

Where is most of the atoms mass found?

An atom's mass is concentrated in its nucleus, which is located in the center of the atom. Protons and neutrons within the nucleus are responsible for its mass; the electrons, which are located outside of the nucleus, don't contribute to the mass of the atom.

Do proton have position inside or the outside the nucleus?

Protons are located within the nucleus of the atom. The mass of an atom is made up of majorly; neutrons and protons (both located within the nucleus). The mass of an electron is almost negligible(non-existent).

Where do atoms contain most of their mass?

Most of the mass of an atom is within the nucleus of the atom. The nucleus is composed of protons and Neutrons, whilst the outer orbits are only covered by electrons. Just the protons in the nucleus weight upwards of 1800X more than the electrons outside.

Over 99 percent of the mass of an atom is contained where?

Within the atom's nucleus.

How does the mass of the nucleus compared to the mass of the Atom?

The mass of the nucleus makes up most all of the mass of an atom. The only things outside the nucleus are the electrons. The mass of an electron is ~9.11E-31 kg. The mass of an electron is 1/1836 that of a proton.

What is the dense center of the atom called?

the denser part of an atom is the nucleus. about 99% of the mass of an atom is concentrated within the atom.

What parts of an atom make up the atom's atomic mass?

An atom's mass is located entirely in the nucleus. In the nucleus, there are protons and neutrons. Electrons are located outside of the nucleus, but because the mass of an electron is so insignificantly small, it's not counted when determining the total mass.

Is mass number the combining capacity of an element?

No, mass number is the number of neutrons and protons that exist within the nucleus of the atom for a particular element. It is based on the idea that most of the mass of an atom derives from the nucleus.

Where is the majority of the mass concentrated?

Within the macro-universe, in stars. Within the micro-universe within the nucleus of the atom.

The mass of an atom is contained primarily in its?

The mass of an atom is contained primarily in its nucleus.

Where in the atom is the mass of the atom concentrated?

It is the nucleus. Mass of electrons is too small
