The smallest group of rock forming minerals consists of silicates?

Rock-forming minerals 1. Silicates - are minerals which consist of silicon and oxygen with some metals or nonmetals. Some rocks which have these minerals are granite, sandstone, basalt, gneiss and quartzite. 2. Carbonates - are minerals which consist of carbon, oxygen and some other elements. Rocks in which these minerals are found include marble, limestone and dolomite. 3. Oxides - are minerals which consist of oxygen and some other elements. They are found in rocks such as sandstone and shale. Although there are about 3000 different minerals found on Earth, there are only very few of them which form rocks.

Only about 30 minerals are common in rocks What are they called?

They are refferred to as the common rock-forming minerals.

What occurs when the temperature on a rock is high enough to melt only some of the minerals in a rock?

they transform into magma

Magma is solid?

A natural hot melt composed of a solution of rock-forming materials, steam, and super-heated gases from which igneous rock results.

Only 10 elements compose the bulk of the rock-forming minerals in the continental crust Is this true or false?

false

Explain why some minerals only occur in metamorphic rock?

When the rock was forming other minerals that were near the forming place of the metamorphic rock were mixed in after the pressure has been made on the metamorphic rock. I am a seventh grade teacher so I know the answer. We are going over this in class right now.

Why is magma a slushy mixture of crystals and molten rock?

Slush is a word given to describe half melting water ice where crystals of ice are present together with a little liquid water. If one had a magma made of crystals in present together with liquid rock - this could be described as a "slushy" mix BUT please note a normal Magma will be entirely liquid until it moves to environment where it begins to cool (at which point crystals will start to form in it) - magma is ONLY a slushy mix for a short time - just before it solidifies.

What happens when lava gets solid?

Lava is only actually called Lava when it comes out of the earth. Before that when it is inside the earth, it is refered to as Magma. So, when boiling hot Magma breaks through the earth it becomes Lava and cools forming a black, hard, rock-like substance. :)

What is the material found in magma that is formed from oxygen and silicon?

A material that exists of only silicon and oxygen is called "Silica". Normally when found on it's own, silica is called Quartz. However, most volcanic minerals have some amount of silica in them.

Why is magma only made keep underground?

After magma reaches the surface it is no longer magma it is called lava.

Can a mineral be made of rock?

Rocks are made of minerals. Only a few minerals are rock forming and most rock is made from a combination of the commonest of these. feldspars, quartz, mica, olivine, calcite, pyroxene and amphiboles

What are facts about minerals?

Some facts about minerals:To be classified as a mineral they must be naturally occurringThey must be a solidThey must be crystalline (have an orderly geometric spatial arrangement of atoms)Minerals can me elemental (i.e. formed of one single element only - for example gold, coper or sulphur).Minerals may also be a mixture of a range of differing chemical elements (e.g.Feldspar which can be potassium, sodium or calcium aluminium silicates. The largest group of minerals are the silicates. These are the common rock forming minerals.Another common rock forming mineral class is the carbonates - Calcite, aragonite - both CaCO3 and dolomite CaMg(CO3)2 (forming limestones and dolostones).
