Does one have to give up possessions to join Salvation Army?

Short answer is "NO". Scripture ( The Bible ) sets out giving a proportion of income to the needy, which Christians would normally, but not exclusively give to or through their church, perhaps by covenant or Trust in order that the church may reclaim tax. However most churches, or indeed people, would expect to give according to their income.

The Salvation Army, and most Christian churches, would not expect their Members to obtain income or otherwise gain, from immoral or illegal means.
