No they do not. They help a kid socialize with their friends...Sometimes though, if they too addicted to calling their friends or texting, you may have to take the phone away from them for a bit.

Mostly though, its just a way for a kid to socialize...

And also, if the kid was in trouble, he could call 911 or their parents.
