If the reference is to a compound containing carbon, then many rocks would fit the definition and many would not. If the reference is to a rock that is partially derived from living things, then there are also rocks that would fit that definition, like coal or limestone for instance.

Is it true all rocks contain organic material?

No, not all rocks contain organic material. Rocks are formed from minerals and can have a variety of compositions, but organic material is not a requirement for rock formation. Organic material is typically found in sedimentary rocks, where fossils and organic compounds can be preserved.

Is aluminum an organic material?

What make up organic sedimentary rock?

Organic sedimentary rock is primarily composed of the remains of living organisms, particularly plants and animals. Common types include coal, formed from compressed plant material, and limestone, which can contain the shells and skeletal fragments of marine organisms. These rocks typically accumulate in environments like swamps and ocean floors, where organic material can be preserved over time. The lithification process then turns this organic material into solid rock through compaction and cementation.

C horizon contains organic matter?

The C horizon does not typically contain organic matter, as it is primarily composed of weathered rock material. Instead, organic matter is more commonly found in the upper A horizon of the soil profile.

Is gravel organic?

Gravel is an inorganic material typically made up of small, rock fragments. It is not considered organic because it does not contain living organisms or come from once-living materials.

How are organic sedimentary rocks made out of?

This type of sedimentary rock must have organic material to be created. They are called organic because they are made from organic material such as grass or plankton that, over long periods of time, becomes a type of sedimentary rock. This organic material can be the organism itself or may be given off from the organism.
