VLSI (very large scale integration) technology places tens of thousands of transistors (and their interconnections) on a very pure single-crystal chip of silicon.

A single solar cell is just ONE very largearea junction diode, operating in self produced reverse bias mode.

A common kind of solar cell starts with the same very pure single-crystal silicon, but the later processes are different from VLSI manufacturing processes.

Solar cells don't include any transistors,

So you could say that single-crystal solar cell uses one small part of VLSI technology, plus a bunch of its own unique processes.

Other kinds of solar cell use cast polycrystalline silicon or amorphous silicon or some other starting material.

As of 2007, the highest-efficiency solar cells use 3-junction gallium arsenide instead of silicon.

Their manufacturing processes are even less like VLSI manufacturing.

Why low power VLSI technology is preferredover VLSI technology?

Low power VLSI is preferred over VLSI.It is because of the following reasonsIt consumes less power i. e. the power consumption is lowThe power dissipation is also lowmost of the modern devices need to operate at low powerComplex systems can be designed with reliability as the power consumption is low.We use modern electronic devices like mobiles ans robotics. These are generally compact and movable. Hence, they operate with a battery rather than power connection. Hence, we need low power operation.

What is the difference between FPGA and embedded system?

One of the differences is with respect to chip. VLSI- How to develop a chip Embedded- How to use the chips to produce an efficient system. VLSI - measurement of complexity of chip in terms of number of transistors in one circuit/chip Embedded is a computing platform that is formed by using proper logic to put together n number of VLSI

What technologies uses solar cells to produce electricity?

Basicaly in solar cells the photons are converted to electrons . The solar cells that you see on calculators and satellites are also called photovoltaic (PV) cells, which as the name implies (photo meaning "light" and voltaic meaning "electricity"), convert sunlight directly into electricity. A module is a group of cells connected electrically and packaged into a frame (more commonly known as a solar panel), which can then be grouped into larger solar arrays, like the one operating at Nellis Air Force Base in Nevada. Photovoltaic cells are made of special materials called semiconductors such as silicon, which is currently used most commonly. Basically, when light strikes the cell, a certain portion of it is absorbed within the semiconductor material. This means that the energy of the absorbed light is transferred to the semiconductor. The energy knocks electrons loose, allowing them to flow freely. PV cells also all have one or more electric field that acts to force electrons freed by light absorption to flow in a certain direction. This flow of electrons is a current, and by placing metal contacts on the top and bottom of the PV cell, we can draw that current off for external use, say, to power a calculator. This current, together with the cell's voltage (which is a result of its built-in electric field or fields), defines the power (or wattage) that the solar cell can produce. That's the basic process, but there's really much more to it. On the next page, let's take a deeper look into one example of a PV cell: the single-crystal silicon cell.
