Yes, special attacks give the same experience as any other attack.
You can select an attack type that gives you only defense experience. Note that this will give you no attack or strength experience.
Click on the crossing swords and click w/e mode you want, if you click slash it will give you attack experience, click the attack mode you want for the exp you want!
