Facebook generally sends various updates to Gmail. The various statuses, shares and comments are shared on Gmail. You can stop that by unsubscribing the Emails.
Facebook has a number (on the website) where you can get updates and everything from Facebook. It should be in the help center.
The iPad Facebook app does not have emoticons, but you can add them by installing apps like Emoti HD. These programs work for posts and updates, but not for comments.

facebook stinks and they keep mucking up by making crappy updates to their website that nobody likes and makes the website worse....
WikiAnswers shouldn't be texting you. We don't have any mobile application that would send to your phone. Our email could come to your phone (but not by text, just by email phone applications). If you get Facebook or Twitter updates by text, and some of them are from us, those are just posts on FB or Twitter, and you would have to turn off texting in whatever service that is delivering our stuff to you that way, or stop following us on those services.
I got the new version of facebook by simply turning on the automatic updates
