timing CHAIN It actually has 2 timing chains One for the cams and one for a combination balance shaft box,oil pump, and sump screen. The box is the weak point of the engine and loves to disintegrate and is currently only available at the dealer for $1200.

Not sure what year your Sonata is but for an example the 2008 Hyundai Sonata Limited 2.4 L 4 or 3.3 L 6 cylinder engine doesn't use a timing belt.
