Do not attempt to use ammunition in a weapon not chambered for it.
Normally a rifle chambered for .243 Winchester would be built on a short action.
(it good for whitetail deer with 100grain bullet) (and awsome for varmits with 55 grains bullet )
Size of the rifle will vary, depending on make/ model. The 30-30 BULLET is larger in diameter and weight than the .243, but has less energy. This is due to a slower bullet.
In order to answer your question correctly I would need to know the model of savage rifle that is chambered in .243 Win.and the overall condition of the rifle to give you a half way decent value.
most certainly not the m-16 is chambered in 223 or 5.56 NATO a 243 or 6mm is a larger round
It MAY shoot. It will not shoot well. It may not shoot safely. The .243 is a necked down .308 cartridge. You are sending a .24 bullet rattling down a .30 barrel. It may or may not trap enough gas to cycle an autoloader. It WILL blow out the case mouth.

.243 was made in a variety of Browning Rifle models. There are too many to list. Perhaps you could provide a model and we could tell you if it "wasn't" chambered in .243
NO! the 243 wssm cartridge is completely different than the 243 Winchester cartridge. The cartridge case is much wider through the body, and has a lot sharper shoulder angle which sets the headspace on both these cartridge,s.The 243wssm is loaded to a higher pressure also.In effect you would blow the receiver up and yourself if you could get the cartridge to chamber in the breech of your rifle! Do not attempt this in a 243 Winchester chambered rifle.
Winchester introduced the .243 Winchester cartridge in 1955 for the bolt-action Model 70, and the lever action Model 88. As far as the year of manufacture of a particular rifle, you will need to provide the manufacturer, model number and serial number to trace it, but if chambered for .243, it logically cannot be early than 1955.
the bigger the animal the bigger the caliber of rifle and the heavier the bullet i.e deer 150 grain bullet 243 caliber and up moose 30-06 180 grain and up for both
you should pay about 300 to about 350 dollars for a Remington 243 rifle
