Giant otters live in the tropical Amazonian region of South America, where the weather is invariably hot and humid, with frequent rain showers.
There are many types of river otters, and some are social while others are not. The Giant River Otter from the Amazon lives in packs, as do North American river otters, female Southern river otters, (males are solitary). The European river otter is extremely territorial.
Giant otters can be found in South America, especially the Amazon river basin. Their numbers are in decline and the animals are becoming rare. This is mainly due to habitat loss and poaching, but the use of toxins, such as mercury, in illegal gold mining is also effecting numbers.
