Carbon dioxide is dissolved in the liquid under pressure inside the bottle to give it fizz. When the bottle is opened, the drop in pressure allows the dissolved carbon dioxide to escape as gas, causing the characteristic fizzing sound and bubbles in the coke.

To have maximum value, the 1984 commemorative 49ers Coke bottle must be un-opened and the painted label must be un-scratched. I've seen them recently (Jan. 2011) go for as much as $15 + shipping on ebay. However, most collectibles dealers will only give you $8-$10 for them.
