No the PS3 slim uses either a 120 GB harddrive or a 250 GB harddrive. All of the PS3 consoles use standard notebook size harddrives and the Sony PlayStation Support website has procedures for the upgrade of the harddrives. see related links
The following paragraph is an excerpt of the first paragraph from the PlayStation Knowledge Center support information on upgrading the Hard Disk Drive.
The PlayStation 3 system hard disk drive (HDD) is removable and upgradeable. An upgrade can be performed by removing the hard drive and replacing it with a larger capacity drive. Please be advised that if you replace the hard drive, the data that was on the original hard drive will not show up on the PlayStation 3 unless you manually back up the data and transfer it to the replacement hard drive.
Procedures are also provided for most PS3 problems that others have found they needed assistance with through a support search that is available at the site.

The original PS3 is "technically" superior. But, the PS3 slim consumes less power, and is smaller. There isn't as much heat with the slim... Personally, I prefer the Original PS3 over the slim.

Yes it the harddrive is updated with the new model. The harddrive needs to be set up for the system that it is in. It would not be a fat PS3 harddrive in a PS3 slim and still allow the PS3 slim to work. You could not even put it in a different model Fat PS3 without uploading the new information for that model PS3. They are all just standard laptop harddrives (2.5" internal Serial ATA HDD) like all PS3 use and then loaded with the unique model information that only that model can use. You certainly could not use a early PS2 capable harddrive to give your slim a capability to play PS2 games. see related link

The 60 GB model plays PS2 games and the slim PS3 does not. To Play PS2 games the 60 GB PS3 needs to be working and the slim does not come into it. If the 60 GB model needs parts then it needs the original parts except for the Disc drive and Harddrive which can be upgraded.
