Best Answer

No. And its NOT a food.

Additional information:

Although most people do not view water as a food, the U.S. Food & Drug Administration defines and regulates water as food, per section section 20l(f) of the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act (2l USC 32l(f)).

Not exactly. All cells need water (fluids) to conduct cellular functions. RBCs in particular 'plump up' with H20. Water is not food; it has no nutritional value or value as energy, such as what food (sugar, carbs, and proteins) provides. But cells need water to keep hormones and electrolytes in balance. The muscles need fluids to process lactic acid and move it to the bloodstream; the bloodstream needs fluids to move lactic acid to the kidneys and prevent lactic acidosis in the muscles. The intestines need water (fluids) to efficiently process solid food wastes and break it down. The kidneys need water (fluid) to efficiently process and eliminate liquid wastes. The brain must have, at cellular level, fluids to have neural conductivity; the heart needs fluids for electrical conductivity.

Why can people abstain from food but water for an extended period of time?

I'm assuming that your question is about why people can abstain from food but not water for an extended period of time. The reason for this is that your body is about 70% water and you need water to operate even on the cellular level. Your body also needs energy, which you get from food. However, your body can store energy and run off of stored energy (usually fats) for a very long time, but the human body does not store excess water for long peiods of time.
