It varies from car to car. In my experience it does help to have the ignition on or the engine running while adding air to the tires. The system seems to recognized the pressure change faster and turn the light out.

Will my car pass inspection with the tire light on
The low tire pressure warning light should automatically reset on a RAV4 when the tire has the proper pressure. Occasionally, it is necessary to drive the car a short distance first.
The tire pressure monitoring system varies on Pontiac Grand Prix depending on the year of the car as some years do not have the TPMS. To reset the TPMS light, refer to the manual for your car.
Tpms is the tire pressure monitoring system. In most cars the light is triggered if the tires are over or under inflated by 5psi or more. If your light is on my recomendation is to take the car to your closest discount tire or americas tire company. They have a bay specificaly for checking air and resetting the tpms system which is free of charge. If it happens to be a case in which you have a nail or something in your tire then they will also repair it for free.
Pressure is equal throughout the tire.
When your car shakes when you accelerate and your tire light comes on it's wise to pull off the road as soon as safe and check your tires. The tire light means low pressure in at least one tire. The shake signifies quick release of air from a tire as from a sudden puncture.

Air pressure is the same throughout the tire.
Properly inflate tires, drive car, light goes out.
No. A car will get better mileage with the correct tire pressure.
There is no way a user can reset the tire pressure light manually except to make sure there is tire pressure above 25-26 lbs on all 5 tires. The tire pressure system also monitors the tire pressure in the spare tire. So after you have checked that all the tires on the car (pressure should be about 32 lbs check your driver side door sticker for specifics) make sure to check the air pressure in the spare and fill as needed. This should solve your problem and turn that annoying little light off.
Check the pressure in all of the tires and inflate them to the pressure indicated on the door jam. The light should go off within a few minutes. If it stays on then you have a bad sensor in the tire or on the car.
