It reminds life is temporary and it is not smart to be after non-perpetual reasons! For thinking people, it is a great message for a real meaning of life.
Jesus brought the message of eternal life to his followers. His death and resurrection made it possible for his followers to be with God. Death in this world is not the end for those who believe.

Your parents teach us and the church of any religion teaches us. We can learn from the Gospel passages. Our parent were the first ones to teach us about God an to tell stories.

Christians (I am one, so I know) have a belief that is written all throughout God's Word: that living a life away from God ultimately leads us to death (because of sin). This means that when we die, having not accepted Jesus as our savior, we will be detached from God (the source of all life). So having "life" in a church is simply having life (God) as a part of you. In contrast, being out of church (away from God) is the opposite of life (death). This does not mean that you HAVE to go to church to be saved. But God wants us, when we come to know Him, to become a part of His congregation of sinners, on a journey to bettering their relationship with God together.
The church does not teach about the issues of capital punishment because of the separation of church and state This only applies in the US. There are no such limitations in Australia, for example, where many churches state in their teachings that no person has the right to take the life of another (except in issues of war). However, churches differ in their views on this, and there is no hard and fast rule that applies across the board.
