In practical applications, vapor-compression refrigeration systems are the most commonly used refrigeration systems, and each system employs a compressor. In a basic vapor compression refrigeration cycle as shown in Figure 3.28, four major thermal processes take place as follows: • evaporation, • compression, • condensation, and • expansion.
The combination of I-Time and E-Time called is called the 'Machine Cycle'
Take the simple example of a heat engine proforming the carnot cycle. Chemical energy moves the system from one thermaldynamic state to another, returning to the initial state at the end of every cycle. The compression and expansion in transition between states can be used to do work.
it creates a cycle
When something vibrates, like a loudspeaker, it compresses the air and increases the pressure of the air when it moves out. When the loudspeaker moves in it creates a partial vacum and a decrease in air pressure. The increase/decrease in air pressure is propagated thru the air (or any medium),as a longitudinal wave, by pushing the air in front of it. The part of the cycle which produces the decrease in pressure is called a "rarefacation" of the air.

Pressure increases due to load(or heat intake from evaps).if asking about off cycle. If asking about compression cycle, its the compression of vapor into a higher pressure side of system along with heat of compression adding to temp-pressure relationship.
It is called the compression stroke.
Intake,compression,combustion,exhaust.
Compression and ignition
The four strokes are... Intake, Compression, Combustion, Exhaust.
