The 1987 Celebrity uses an electronic speedometer. There is a VSS(vehicle speed sensor) on the trans-axle that could have failed. The speedometer itself may have failed, the ECM (engine control module "computer") may have failed or there could be wiring issues.
1996 and newer have an electronic speedometer and a vehicle speed sensor that operates your electronic speedometer and also sends a signal to the powertrain control module (PCM) The PCM uses this signal to control several different functions of the engine and transmission.. Your 1996 doesn't have a conventional speedometer cable.
The speedometer cable on a 2008 Toyota Highlander is integrated within the vehicle's electronic system, meaning it doesn't have a traditional mechanical speedometer cable like older vehicles. Instead, the speedometer relies on a vehicle speed sensor (VSS) located on the transmission. This sensor sends electronic signals to the vehicle's computer, which then relays the speed information to the dashboard display. If you're troubleshooting speedometer issues, it's best to check the VSS and related wiring.
The 1987 Chevy Celebrity uses an electronic speedometer, there is no speedometer cable. Assuming your speedometer has failed here are some possible causes: The VSS. vehicle speed sensor, may have failed. The speedometer may have failed. The ECM, engine control module aka computer, may have failed. There may be wiring issues such as unplugged, dirty connections, broken wires, etc.
It's 'electronic control module', and the one for the engine will be one of the computers on the vehicle.
The electronic control module is an embedded system that controls one or more of the electrical systems in a motor vehicle. These are sometimes referred to as the car's computer.
There is no odometer/speedometer cable in that vehicle. The odometer/speedometer is electronic.
1996 and later Explorers use an electronic speedometer which is operated by a vehicle speed sensor (VSS) The powertrain control module also uses the vehicle speed sensor input signal for several different engine and transmission control functions.

Vehicle Speed Sensor
I believe starting on the 1996 Explorer , it went to an electronic speedometer with a vehicle speed sensor ( VSS ) so it doesn't have a conventional speedometer cable
The speedometer on a 1993 Dodge Dynasty operates using a combination of a mechanical speed sensor and a cable connected to the vehicle's transmission. As the vehicle moves, the transmission turns the cable, which spins a magnet inside the speedometer. This creates a magnetic field that causes a needle to move along the speedometer's dial, indicating the vehicle's speed. In some models, an electronic speed sensor may be used instead, sending signals to the vehicle's onboard computer to display speed digitally.
