Internal fertilization insures that neither the sperm or the egg is exposed to predators or the elements. Embryo develops to viability inside the womb for the duration of development also protecting the offspring from predators and the enviroment. Nutrition is not limited to a finite amount, (as in a discreet egg), and the environmental temperature is stable.
