No. To increase darkness, you decrease the amount of light reflected. To increase contrast, you increase the extremes of colour. For example, if you have a picture made up of areas of black, white and grey, and you want to increase darkness, you replace some of the white with grey and some of the grey with black. If you want to increase contrast you replace grey with black and white. Increasing darkness decreases the amount of white; increasing contrast decreases the amount of grey.
