Actually it depends on the toucan species. With most species the males and females have the same coloration, however it may still be possible to visually sex some despite this. Emerald toucanets for example have the same coloration regardless of gender, but there's some differences in size, and proportions that with practice make it possible to distinguish their genders visually with enough practice. However in the case of green aracaris and a few other species the males do have different coloration from females, and are quite easy to sex visually. I've never heard of a species of toucan where the male is actually more colorful than the female or vice versa however.

yes, males are the flashy ones that you typically see. females are much more drab, brown, smaller beak, less color.

I have a different answer

Actually there is very little sexual dimorphism amongst toucans, with a few species being exceptions. Females do tend to have relatively shorter bills and be slightly smaller, but they are just as brightly colored. Even in the cases in which the sexes have different plumage (green aracaris, and Guyana toucanets are the examples that come to mind), the females still are no more drab.

Most toucan species are not different in coloration depending on gender. Females' bills are a little shorter typically. In the genus (Selenidera) that does have gender-based differences in coloration, the differences are usually subtle like brown rather than black in the females, or the lack of a significant streak. It doesn't seem to have anything to do with brightness.

Visually sexing Toco and billed toucans is impossible, since they are identical.

Cloacal probing/examination is the only way to sex them.

For most species of toucan, the male and female look very similar.

Some say that you can determine the sex of a toucan by looking at the shape of the beak, with males having longer and more curved beaks. This is not a reliable method, though - DNA testing is the only way to know for sure.
