Yes the Mayas do claim the world will end in 2012. Personally i don't think it is true. How can they possibly predict the future by a calendar they made. I mean really is there anyone who can really predict the future and know it is going to happen? No! To tell you truth i think the reason their calender ended was because they ran out of room on the rock they were writing the years on. Is it true? i don't know. But for people to predict the future that is going to happen long after they are dead and be right just does not make sense. Sure they might have been smart people but realize that these people are the people who discovered that the sun comes up in the morning and goes down at night and then the moon goes up.
