I don't know it, but I never think he actually think himself to be related to the sun goddess Amaterasu (天照大神).
She is the most important goddess in Japanese mythology, but no one can prove that she really exists as you can't do your god except in inner reality.
Most important is that there are cultural relations between the emperors and the sun goddess. In Kojiki (古事記, "Record of Ancient Matters") compiled from the ancient myths in the 8th century, there are descriptions that the emperors are descendants of her. We may consider that the hierarchy-emperor compiled it for the purpose of reinforcing his status.
