the earth is postitioned between the sun and the moon(except on the rare occasions when there is an eclipse) and the light we see coming from the moon is actually just a reflection of that of the sun. As the moon and earth each move along their respective orbit lines their positioning in relation go each other changes and so, therefore, does the amount of light that can travel from the sun to the moon without being blocked by the earth on its way. So, when the three bodies are perfectly aligned no light can travel from the sun to the moon so the moon is not visible in the sky and when the earth does not block the lights path at all we can see the full bright disk you refer to. In the stages in between these points, as the earth moves along its eliptical orbit, we can see the slivers of moon getting progressively bigger and then smaller.
