Yes, when a rabbit mother is about 28 days pregnant she will pull fur from her stomach and from under her chin and birth her rabbits there at about 31 days. But keep in mind you should put in some kind of nest box where she can do this.

The gestation period for a rabbit is 28-31 days, usually the rabbit will give birth on day 31. From day 25 you should ensure your rabbit has plenty of nesting material, she will also more often than not use fur from her body. She will normally make the nest the night before and give birth early the next morning. This is an instinct as a rabbit in the wild will not build a nest too early as they will not want to draw attention to the nest and alert predators. The babies are likely to be covered over by the mothers fur. If not it's best you cover them up because the doe wont until she feeds them. You should remove the kits from the nest once a day to check that they have full bellies and are healthy. If you find a sick baby it's best to remove it as to not infect the others with whatever it has. The mother will not spend much time with the nest, visiting only once a day for around 5 minutes. She will only feed them once DO NOT force her to feed them more than once and to stay with the kits. Do not mistake her natural instinct to stay away from the nest as neglect. She is keeping away as to attract predators to her scent and not the babies. Any dead kits should be removed as they will cause illness in the surviving babies. Nesting material can be anything from pine shavings (probably the cleanest way to go) to alfalfa (recommended so that you don't have to buy pellets) but coastal hay is not recommended due to a mildew that gets into it when wet and it attracts flies and can potentially make the doe sick from the mildew and diseases flies carry. Some does will not make a nest, you have to make one for them or all babies will die. Some wont mess with nesting materials until a day or two before birth. If you doe(s) start making a nest right after she has met a buck chances are she is having a false pregnancy, she'll make a nest and even add on weight but she'll get out of it around 16 days after being with the buck.

Yes, and that is often the case, but a wild rabbit and a pet that is handled often will likely vary in the times they choose or are able to do so.

Are rabbit nests made for baby rabbits?

A male rabbit would not make the actual nest for the female but he would be very happy for his fur to be pulled out for the babies to have a comfortable nest. Any rabbit in the pen wouldn't mind the mother rabbit pulling there fur out for a nest because rabbits LOVE to be respected.

It is normal to find a rabbit's nest with fur from the mother. It is doubtful that this is a requirement for baby rabbits to survive but it presumably adds some protection.

What do you do when a newborn rabbit comes out of it's nest?

Put it back in the nest, and check on the rabbits to see if all of them are still in the nest. You need to also make sure after a couple of days that the mother rabbit is still feeding and taking care of all of them. The mother rabbit might abandone her rabbits cause they now have a scent on it. Or you can let nature run it's course, that means leave it alone and return to your life.

Where do rabbits live in the city?

you can find baby rabbits in their nest. if you don't know where the nest is then if you see an adult rabbit then quietly follow it because it will go back to its nest. if you go to it's nest and there are no baby rabbits then have a look in a different area.

How can you tell when your rabbit is pregnant -- do they get fat?

Only very experienced rabbit handlers can gently palpitate the rabbit's abdomen to feel the little baby rabbits. If you do not know what you are doing, you could hurt the mother and kill the babies by doing this. If you think your female rabbit might be pregnant, provide it with a nest box so it can start building a nest. A few days before she is ready to deliver, she will start pulling out her own fur and padding the box with hay. Be aware however, that some female rabbits have 'false pregnancies' and may start to build a nest even though they are not pregnant.
