First make sure your trunk is clear of obstructions and the capacity shield that limits the height of things in your trunk is in place. As you know the shield works to allow for the roof mechanism to have room in the trunk to work. Without this shield in place you can get some strange reactions from the roof mechanisms including activating the roll bars.
There is no definite time that you need to replace a convertible top. If it is properly maintained then it can last for many years.
Replace the convertible door seal.
Hey, it's easy. Put emergency brake on. Open the trunk, look to the left and take off the round piece holding the mechanism. Just turn the little screw thingy counterclockwise--then go up front and unlatch and pull your roof down manually---then go back and tighten up the screw clockwise. When I found out how much it cost to replace the mechanism so it would work automatically, I figured manual's much easier and cheaper!
