The thermosphere has lower density than the layers below it but higher than the exosphere above it.

The density of the Earth's atmosphere decreases nearly exponentially with altitude. At 400 km altitude the density is typically about 6g/m3 . This changes considerably when there is a solar storm.

The air density is so low in this layer that most of the thermosphere is what we normally think of as outer space. In fact, the most common definition says that space begins at an altitude of 100 km (62 miles), slightly above the mesopause at the bottom of the thermosphere.
