There really isn't a 'gene' for twins. However, fraternal twins are the result of a woman releasing two eggs at a time. This trait can run in the womens side of the family so there is more chance her daughters will release 2 eggs at a time.

To date there is no indication that identical twins have any genetic markers. All women have a chance of having their eggs split and having identical twins.

Can you still have twins without having them run in your family?

doubtful Yes, only fraternal twinning (caused by releasing more than one egg) has a genetic connection, and that connection only holds on the mother's side. So, many twins are born with no family history of twins at all.

Do fraternal twins only run on mother's side?

Yes. Fraternal twins are due to two eggs being released. No - If they are on either side of the family, the incidence of twin pregnancy is increased, whether they run on the mum's side or the dad's side. And in addition to the above answer, fraternal (non-identical) twins are due to two different eggs being fertilised by two different sperm.

Can you have twins if your mother had twins?

If your partner is a twin his mom is a twin his brother was a twin and his brothers had twins what are the likelihood of you having twin?

conceiving twins has nothing to do with the males side of the family. It all depends on the female and if she hyper ovulates or not.

What are some ways to increase chances of having twins?

Oh yes it does! I never dreamt I would become pregnant with twins. There are no twins in my side of the family. None that I know of. However, at my baby shower, I found out from my boyfriend's family that there were at least 4 sets of twins in his family; his grandmother had twins, his grand aunt had 2 sets of twins and his cousin had twins. It's amazing how science doesn't know everything because my high school friend had fraternal twins and when she found out I was having identical twins she told me that that wasn't hereditary, but obviously it is after learning my boyfriend's family's history.

How likely are you to have twins if your grandmother on your moms side had twins?

If my husband is twin what is my chances of having twins if there are no twins on my side of the family?

Yes, twins have more likelihood of having twins than other people who are not twins. >>> This is only true if it is the female who is a twin. Since twinning is caused by either a) ovulating more than one egg at a time (fraternal twins) or b) having the egg separate completely during mitosis (identical twins), it doesn't make any difference whether or not the male partner is a twin. It all has to do with the ova; therefore, only the female's family history of twins matters.
