It was called "underground" because slave owners could never find out how or when slaves escaped. The slave owners claimed it must be underground since they could never see the slaves run off; however, the Underground Railroad was just extremely sneaky and never was underground.

Abolitionists lived along the Underground Railroad so they could assist slaves on the run by giving a safe place to spend the night. Other abolitionists lived in big cities to inform slaves about the underground railroad.
