Can you sell a car you just purchased before you get the title?

If the previous owner signed the title over to you and your name is listed as the buyer then yes you must title it first before anyone else can title it.

Is it legal for a co-signer to reposses the vehicle that is financed through a bank?

I don't think so. The co-signer is not the registered owner and has no claim to the vehicle. Only the bank or the loan company (which lends the buyer the money and holds the vehicle title until it's paid for) can repossess. The co-signer just guarantees the loan. If the buyer defaults, the bank will come after him to make payments.

I recently bought a single family home in California and the previous owner left a motorcycle on the property -How do I take legal ownership of this motorcycle - It doesn't have a license plate?

It is abandoned property left on your property by the previous land owner. I suggest running a VIN search by your state's motor vehicle office just to make sure the bike isn't stolen as it is rather unusual for the previous owner to leave behind a motor vehicle unless he knows that it is illegal or is junk (maybe the engine is busted?).

How do I get previous owners insurance?

You can not legally obtain a previous vehicle owners insurance information. Insurance policies and associated information are protected under state and federal privacy laws. There is no legitimate legal reason for anyone to want the previous vehicle owners insurance information. The previous owners auto insurance would have automatically terminated and all Insurer obligations ceased when the vehicle was transferred to another owner. Any previous insurance would have been for the benefit and protection of the named insured at the time and no benefit at all would transfer to a new owner. In short, The new owner has no right of claim against a previous owners insurance. If your just interested in the vehicle's history you can try a service such as Car Fax or the like to get those records without breaking the law and invading someone elses privacy.

How do you get the title for a vehicle?

The previous owner will have the title, if he or she owns it free and clear. Otherwise, the bank or loan agency has possession of the title until the balance owed to them has been paid off, and will show them as leinholder. Never ever purchase a vehicle without obtaining the title from the previous owner(s). It is their responsibility to obtain this FOR you, not the other way around. If you purchased and are restoring a non-running vehicle , just take the recept with a note from the owner to Motor vehicles and file for a lost title. This often happens with an estate purchase.

If Im not the original owner of vehicle how do I get insured on the vehicle?

You do not have to be the original owner to be on the insurance. You just need to call the insurance carriers company and ask that you be added as a driver on that vehicle.

Does a cosigner need to be on car insurance?

In most cases these days, when people think they are a Co-Signer, they are in fact a Co-Buyer. If you are a co-buyer then by default you are a co-owner. In the event of an accident both the driver and the owner(s) can be sued for incurred losses. To determine this just look at the vehicle Title or Registration, If your name is there, you are in fact a co-buyer and co-owner. Unfortunately, there are many car lots and salesmen out there these days who do not clarify this to the buyer(s) and allow you to think you are only co-signing when you are not. There is a Huge difference in the two terms where your legal liability is concerned If you are truly a Co-signer, you would not need to be on the policy. .

Can you legally hide a vehicle from a joint owner?

No. A joint owner has every right to the vehicle, just as much as you do. That includes knowing where it is, and having access to and usage of it.

Can you sell your car to Carmax if you do not have the title?

As far as I understand it you cannot sell any motor vehicle to an automotive dealership without the title. Also if the vehicle is not titled in your name the said individual seen on the title would need to be present. The process to getting a title for your vehicle if it has been lost is simple as long as you are the registered owner of the vehicle. The process for acquiring a replacement title is called bonding the title. If you are not the owner on the title the same "bonding" applies it just requires you to get the previous owner of the vehicle involved in the process with a proper bill of sale and or other means of proof that you have taken "ownership" of the vehicle.
