Donnie darko When he goes to sleep, the rest of the movie right up until he dies is a dream, a nightmare showed to him by frank, showing donnie whT would happen if donnie darko broke his fate (escaping the jet engine sent from the future) this creates a virtual reality (his dream) of a corrupted universe, which can only stay stable for 28 days (as stated by frank) now, the jet engine explained, as seen at the end of the film, the jet engine is sucked into the time funnel, sending it back in time to kill donnie (his fate) but in the dream/nightmare, donnie escapes his fate, corrupting his universe, once donnie wakes up, he starts laughing because he thinks that it is any normal, made - up dream, and goes back to sleep, only to be killed by the jet engine following his correct fate and saving the world, then it goes to the mad world scene showing the other characters, who were also shown the dream, oh and the frank that donnie sees occasionally is the soul of the dead frank, the guy that donnie shoots at the end of the film, thus creating bunny suit frank.

SCI FI EXPLANATION - Because the real Frank (who you see near the end get shot in the eye) dies in the "Tangent Universe" (meaning he dies after the point where the jet engine lands on Donnies house) his future self somehow is able to reappear as a ghost like figure and guide Donnie toward his destiny - ie. sending the jet engine back and therefore closing the rip in time and making things right again. This is as defined by the sci fi rules set out in the "Philosophy of Time Travel" (kind of a compendium to the move - pages are displayed on screen in the directors cut). SPIRITUAL EXPLANATION - He represents a divine intervention. Be it God, an angel, an alien? ... who is also trying to guide Donnie. The being has chosen the form of Frank so that when the time comes Donnie will recognise that Frank is the one he has to shoot. LOGICAL EXPLANATION - He is a figment of Donnies imagination, because he is crazy as batshit. There's probably other ways to look at it too.

Cherita Chen (sp?) who had a crush on Donnie, who was the only person to take up for her, seemed content. While Swayze as the manipulative Perv was sobbing uncontrollably, the wicked witch of a teacher was seemingly in shock. My guess Swayze's secret was revealed in the Normal Universe as well as the tangent. "What makes you think I am Not a Super Hero?"
