Abortions are covered when Medicare coverage criteria are met.

Abortion procedures are covered only under the following circumstances:

1. a. If the pregnancy is the result of rape or incest

b. In the case where the woman suffers from a physical disorder, physical injury, or physical illness, including a life threatening physical condition caused by or arising from the pregnancy itself, that would, as certified by a physician, place the woman in danger of death unless an abortion is performed.

2. When medical services for the care and treatment of miscarriage (spontaneous abortion) are covered.

3. Abortions for reasons other than listed above are not covered. Examples include, but are not limited to:

a. Selective abortion, except when the coverage criteria above are met

b. Abortions induced by mifepristone
