maybe I'm wrong, but i think historically more men have worn thongs then women. my reference are sumo wrestlers and those Japanese drummers, American Indians from the amazons to Canada (did you see Apocalypto), and ash-covered yogi dudes (i forget what that thick thong is called). anyway, but in an American or Western sense it probably is gay. However, i wear a couple of y-backs which are not entirely too different from jock straps, and are more athletic in purpose. Its perfect for yoga, however, i;d never wear a lingerie type or one without an athletic band...that's getting into queer territory. No girl I've dated has ever freaked out over it, probably cause i just have a couple and i;ve framed it in an athletic sense (like "its just like a jockstrap"). The y-backs are actually good for athletics dudes, just don't let it be seen in the locker room.

Personally as a woman, the only reason to wear a thong is to avoid having underwear lines show through your clothes. Because men's pants are much looser fitting, there is no need for a thong. So why would you be wearing a thong? If it's because you're wearing tight pants or you want to show off your butt naked, I would say that is a pretty "gay" thing to do.
